Smile… It’s the Best Medicine

Everyone knows that your mouth is part of your body, but not everyone understands how much your oral health impacts your overall health.

In a position paper published in the year 2000 entitled “Oral Health in America,” the U.S. Surgeon General highlighted the direct link between dental health and a person’s well-being. Since that time, oral infections, particularly periodontal issues or gum disease, have been shown to contribute to such conditions as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and pregnancy complications. Similarly, tooth decay, or bacterial infection of the teeth, can lead to serious medical complications that require emergency intervention if left untreated.

Although it may not be the primary reason patients seek to straighten their teeth, orthodontic treatment goes a long way toward improving oral health. Crooked or crowded teeth often collect plaque and tartar more quickly than straight teeth, and they also are more difficult to clean. Straight teeth can therefore help patients maintain healthier gums and reduce the development of cavities. As explained by the Surgeon General, this improvement can in turn directly impact your overall health.

The benefits of healthy, straight teeth go far beyond physical wellness. It’s also important to consider the emotional impact that a perfected smile can make on your daily life. Many people hide their teeth because they are embarrassed by the appearance of their smile. Straightened teeth can greatly increase self-confidence – directly impacting your ability to interact in social situations, develop strong relationships and excel in your career. Better still, recent research from the University of Kansas reveals that smiling can improve a person’s mood by releasing chemicals in the brain that decrease stress.

So, whether it comes to your oral health, your physical health or your emotional well-being, smiling truly is the best medicine.

Why did you become an orthodontist?

Last week, I went to an elementary school to speak to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders about braces and brushing their teeth. I love giving these presentations because the kids get so into it. After showing them a video of what it looks like when you get your braces put on, many of them told me that they felt “completely relieved” and “not terrified anymore.” I think that they thought that the braces had to be drilled into the teeth, but by the end of the video they were excited rather than scared of the process.

Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin with braces to celebrate National Orthodontic Health MonthIt seems that there is a month or day to celebrate everything. There’s National Sibling Day, National Brush Day, and my personal favorite, National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day! Today, in addition to being Halloween, is National Caramel Apple Day!

We’re also wrapping up National Orthodontic Health Month. Orthodontic health is about making sure that you are taking care of those chompers while undergoing treatment with braces or Invisalign and beyond!  Here at Miami Orthodontic Specialists, we are also celebrating that our new office is open and that we can begin to share the gift of beautiful smiles in our new space.

P.S. If you have braces on, please don’t celebrate National Caramel Apple Day! 😉

The Demolition is Real

One month has officially passed since we started construction on our new office. The progress is exciting to watch even though “progress” right now means demolition of the old interior.

I love HGTV. My husband actually got me hooked on Property Brothers a couple years ago. Sometimes the only way I can stay on the treadmill for longer than 15 minutes is when I’m watching Drew and Jonathan transform those fixer-uppers into beautiful homes. The results are always so amazing. One thing I don’t think they show enough of, though, is the demolition phase of the project—the scary time when you don’t know how all of that rubble and empty space is going to morph into a beautiful home. The show definitely makes it seem like these projects only take minutes to complete. It would be amazing if my construction could be done by the end of my workout. Unfortunately, it takes slightly longer. In the meantime, we are very fortunate to have access to my father’s endodontic office where I can treat patients while waiting for the construction to finish.

We’re one month into our construction and my office looks way worse than when we started. These photos of the “demo phase” will show it all. I can’t wait to see the finished result!
